The School of Chemistry at the University of Birmingham is a vibrant and thriving academic community, with over 90 academic and research staff, 20 professional services staff and over 600 students. With a strong focus on its four Research Themes of Energy, Sustainability, Environment and Health, and a number of interdisciplinary Interest Groups serving as testbeds to explore new and emerging areas of interest, the School is a dynamic place to work with ambitious plans to expand its research activity; indeed, we are in an exciting period of growth: major investment from the University will deliver a new state-of-the-art research building (opening in 2023/24) while our Collaborative Teaching Laboratory, which opened September 2018, is already revolutionising how we teach undergraduate practical chemistry. The School of Chemistry is a member of the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences. Staff collaborate widely within the College as well as with researchers in the College of Life and Environmental Sciences and College of Medical and Dental Sciences. Collaboration is encouraged and facilitated through our campus location as well as through research institutes, which include the Birmingham Center for Strategic Elements and Critical Materials, the Birmingham Energy Institute, Birmingham Institute for Sustainability & Climate Action and Institute for Global Innovation.
We are seeking an outstanding candidate who will provide significant strategic leadership and positively enhance the profile of the School and the Institution. The post-holder will have an excellent international reputation, based on an extensive track record of leading on innovative research, which has had a major quantifiable influence on their subject area. The post-holder will act as a hub around which new appointments will be made to develop and strengthen areas of strategic significance to the School and Institution. The post-holder will also make a significant contribution to teaching and learning, contribute at a high level to leadership and management activities, and act as a role model in respect of citizenship.
The post holder will have an outstanding and sustained profile of achievement evidenced by the following:
- PhD or equivalent qualification or an equivalent body of work;
- A substantial record of international quality outputs;
- An excellent and widely recognized reputation among peers internationally;
