Junior Virtualization Engineer at British Geological Survey


This role will be based at the BGS headquarters in Keyworth, Nottingham

Appointment will be at UKRI Pay Band C – starting salary £25,702 to £27,938 per annum (depending on qualifications and experience)

About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic early career Junior Virtualization Engineer to join the IT, Security & Application Development Team, which sits in the BGS Operations function.

Responsibilities will include the management of the BGS virtualisation infrastructure, covering patching, securing, managing, and upgrading an estate of over 750 virtual servers. These servers provide mission critical services to both internal staff and external stakeholders, including many public-facing and high-profile websites and services.

The post holder will work closely with Application Developers and the DevOps team to ensure that they are able to develop systems in an environment which gives them the freedom needed for frequent testing, but which still meets the requirements and standards of the BGS IT security policies.

About you

You will have good all round IT knowledge and an interest in developing and running servers, virtual servers, and storage technologies together with excellent troubleshooting and communication skills. The candidate should have some working knowledge or interest in Microsoft Windows Server, Microsoft AD, Microsoft PowerShell, Linux/Unix, VMware vSphere, and Dell storage.

Some knowledge of container hosting technologies and their orchestration, including Docker and/or Kubenetes would be very useful.

The successful applicant will develop high levels of expertise and knowledge in the areas of server infrastructure and DevOps plus other related technologies.
