Job Summary:

The University of Wisconsin-Madison, one of the world’s top-ranked research universities, invites
nominations and applications for the position of dean and vice provost of the International Division.

The International Division is a resource for campus, the UW System, the city of Madison, and the state reinforcing the University’s position as a top global institution and ensuring that students are prepared to successfully engage in an increasingly diverse and interconnected world. The dean and vice provost of the International Division provides leadership and promotes faculty collaboration and initiatives across the institution for international education, research, and engagement, and for strategic planning and coordination in this area. Reporting to the provost, the dean/vice provost’s primary roles and areas of responsibility are to serve as the Senior International Officer for UW-Madison and oversees the Institute for Regional and International Studies (including the International Studies Major), International Academic Programs, the International Internship Program, the International Projects Office, the Language Program Office, International Student Services, International Faculty and Staff Services, and the Dean’s Office which includes International Safety and Security and other units.

About the International Division
The Division consists of over 120 faculty and staff across seven units and has a budget of approximately $60 million. It provides support and services to nearly 8,000 international students per year and 600 faculty and staff. In addition, the Division sends over 2,000 students abroad each year to 200 programs in 60 countries.

The Division is home to seven Title VI grant funded National Resource Centers and, combined with its Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships, brings over $16 million in federal funding to campus over a four-year grant cycle.

  • Serve as chief academic and administrative officer of the International Division and as Senior International Officer of the University
  • Provide leadership in and oversight of the Division’s teaching, research, engagement, and outreach missions
  • Provide personnel oversight for the Division, including the recruitment of a diverse staff, and support for professional growth and development
  • Promote diversity and an inclusive campus climate
  • Oversee the Division’s budget and long-term planning
  • Provide leadership for the Division’s advancement and alumni activities, including the external advisory board
  • Serve as an active member of the Deans Council and Provost’s Leadership Team and foster cross-campus collaborations with other deans and vice provosts.

Major qualifications for this position include a relevant background in scholarship and teaching with evidence of successful leadership experience in the management of international and interdisciplinary programs.


  • Earned doctorate or terminal degree in a discipline relevant to the position
  • Record of scholarly achievement and academic accomplishments appropriate to the individual’s academic discipline, and capable of receiving tenure at UW-Madison


  • A record of successful, visionary leadership that demonstrates an understanding and appreciation of the dynamic, changing academic environment, and the diverse missions and constituencies of a major public research university, particularly international education and engagement
  • Demonstrated commitment to promote the diversity of students, faculty and staff, equal employment opportunity, affirmative action and non-discriminatory practices, and to advance an inclusive climate
  • Successful leadership experience in managing a complex unit
  • Communication experience, including excellent written communication and public speaking skills
  • Successful advancement experience

  • Candidates should be aware of intellectual developments in area and international studies; have significant international experience; demonstrate the ability to build a broad vision for advancing UW-Madison’s global presence in the spirit of the Wisconsin Idea
