Research Associate in the Physical and Digital Validation of Multifunctional Materials and Manufacturing
80% of the costs of realizing a product is in validation of prototypes (physical or cyber). It is often common that the decision to progress from concepts to prototype is taken without a complete set of information, leading to risk and often wasted resources. Wouldn’t it be great to have an “engine” that could guide the design stage, informed by better quality and comprehensive know-how of manufacturing? Would it make sense to carry out cyber-physical validations before committing to a final design? This would lead to right-first time Product realization, with savings in capital investment, efficiencies in time and minimizing waste and resources consumed.
This research post falls within the EPSRC Program Grant ‘RIED’ (Re-Imagining Engineering Design) https://www.lboro.ac.uk/news-events/news/2021/june/cyber-seed-reid-project/a multi-institute project investigating new concepts for high-value manufacturing.

We are seeking applicants with a profound interest in the manufacture and validation of high performing multifunctional products. The candidate will join a multidisciplinary team, including industrial collaborators. This post will expose the candidate to a myriad of new techniques and much sought-after skills demanded by academia and industry, including:
- Design of experiments, data harvesting/analysis and interpretation of results to derive insight.
- Modeling techniques at the macro scale, that can inform the direction of experimental activity (eg finite element simulations and numerical computations)
- Development of novel processing manufacturing techniques that allow the realization of new design solutions
- Physical, mechanical and materials characterization techniques
- Management techniques, scaffolded by the ‘Investing in People’ initiative to support professional development of researchers.
