Research Associate in Reduced-Complexity Climate Modeling for Understanding Overshoot Risks at Imperial College London

Job Summary

We are seeking to recruit a creative Research Associate to develop climate modeling tools and carry out high-impact research! You will become an active member of two international research consortia (ESM2025 and PROVIDE) and join the Center for Environmental Policy.

ESM2025 and PROVIDE are two EU-funded research consortia that work to connect exciting new science to society. ESM2025 – Earth system models for the future – is a new and ambitious European research project that will build a new generation of Earth system models in support of mitigation and adaptation strategies in line with the commitments of the UN Paris Agreement. PROVIDE is a highly collaborative international project delivering concrete climate information on the risks of overshooting the temperature limits of the Paris Agreement. PROVIDE links global emission pathways to regional sectoral impacts, urban climate risk projections, and assessments of unavoidable impacts and limits to adaptation. A core emphasis of the project lies in translating scientific insights for users in four iconic regions around the globe and making them available through an online open-source platform.

Duties and responsibilities

You will be part of the team responsible for developing tools to translate climate science advances to insights for real-world users, led by Dr Joeri Rogelj at the Center for Environmental Policy, in close collaboration with the partner Climate Analytics and the wider PROVIDE and ESM2025 consortia. You will research and co-develop open-source climate modeling tools and contribute to the climate risk dashboard that the PROVIDE project will deliver.

This will involve the development of methods to capture climate uncertainties in simple climate models, for example, by adding a simplified nitrogen cycle, understanding the implications of these uncertainties for overshooting risks, and providing data to translate these insights for users. This activity will contribute to community efforts to provide open-source analytical tools for climate change research.

Essential requirements

You will have a PhD or equivalent professional qualification in an area relevant to climate science, modeling, or research software development.

In addition, we are looking for candidates with the following essential criteria:

  • Excellent knowledge of climate science and biogeochemical cycles
  • Knowledge of scientific computing languages, including excellent knowledge of Python, and collaborative programming processes, or a demonstrable ability to reach this level in the first two months of the project
  • Creative approach to problem-solving, and ability to develop and apply new concepts
  • Excellent written communication skills and the ability to write clearly for publication
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision
  • Ability to prioritize own work to deliver on time
  • Being service oriented and working towards the project’s overall success

Further Information

This is a full time, fixed term position for up to 24 months starting in January 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter. You will be based at South Kensington Campus.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £38,194 – £41,388 per annum.
