The Electrochemical Science & Engineering Group is looking to hire an experimental researcher to join our diverse and expanding team at the center of cutting-edge research in electrochemical storage. Funded directly by industry or by a range of research bodies such as EPSRC, Innovate UK and the Faraday Institution, we work with our collaborators to develop the next generation of batteries and Battery Management Systems, with the goal of improving their performance and lifetime.
In order to achieve this, the electrochemical, thermal and mechanical performance of lithium-ion batteries must be experimentally tested and understood, including their degradation characteristics. This role will involve designing and building bespoke test rigs and procedures, collecting and analyzing data in order to characterize the operational and degradation modes of batteries, and help parametrise physical and reduced order models.
This position will include supporting the work of modellers to test the algorithms for electrochemical, thermal and mechanical performance of lithium-ion batteries, including degradation.

Duties and Responsibilities
As an experimentalist in our group, you will be required to:
- Identify and develop suitable techniques for the collection and analysis of data.
- Design test rigs and experiments to answer research questions.
- Assist modellers in parametrising physical and reduced order battery models.
- Take initiatives in the planning and implementation of research.
You will also be expected to plan and conduct your own work, publishing papers and presenting your work at national and international conferences.
Skills, knowledge and experience
- You will need a degree in Physical Sciences, Engineering or Mathematics (or equivalent experience) for appointment at Associate level, or a bachelor / masters degree for appointment at Assistant level.
- You should have practical experience of working in a research environment, with knowledge of research and statistical methods.
- You will be expected to use creative thinking and apply this to problem-solving, and the development of new concepts.
This is a fixed term position for up to 24 months.
Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £38,194 – £41,388 per annum
