What We Are Looking For

The Associate Vice President (AVP) of Development is responsible for providing strategic oversight, leadership, and management of a comprehensive development effort in support of Baylor University’s priorities and initiatives. The AVP of Development will lead, manage and mentor an Assistant Vice President of Provost Initiatives, an Assistant Vice President of Development (Regional), and an Assistant Vice President (Schools and Colleges). Additionally, this position reports to the Vice President of University Advancement and serves as a member of the management team for the Division of University Advancement. Finally, The AVP will manage a portfolio consisting of 25-50 prospects and is responsible for the successful completion of measurable goals, both individually and as a team, such as face-to-face visits, significant contacts, proposals delivered, and funds raised. .

A bachelor’s degree, a minimum of ten (10) years of professional fundraising experience (preferably in higher education), and Christian faith are required. A Master’s degree, or higher, is preferred. Experience will not be considered in lieu of the educational requirement. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

The ideal candidate will possess the following experience, skills, and abilities.

  • History of increasing leadership experience in a fundraising unit, preferably at institutions of higher education.
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising and expert knowledge of best practices.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, team members, and institutional leaders.
  • Proficiency with computer technology and Microsoft Office software.
  • Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to articulate the needs, interests, and accomplishments of Baylor University to a wide range of audiences.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, high-performing environment and the ability to respond to high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

What You Will Do

  • Serve as direct supervisor to three assistant vice presidents of development as assigned; mentor, set goals, and supervise.
  • With the leadership of the vice president, establish annually measurable goals and objectives and related metrics for new gift commitments secured, proposals made, new prospects qualified, and prospect meetings held.
  • Collaborate with deans, directors, or senior administrators in developing philanthropic agendas-consistent with Baylor’s and colleges’/units’ strategic plans-that major gift donors and prospective donors find attractive and impactful.
  • Participate fully in University Advancement’s prospect management, discovery/qualification visits, and related prospect development programs.
  • In coordination with advancement leaders, establish appropriate goals and metrics for fundraising staff and provide accountable leadership in the attainment of goals.
  • Cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of donors and prospects for major gifts to Baylor.
