Vice Provost for Student Success

Position Summary

The Vice Provost for Student Success serves at the discretion of and reports to the Provost and Chief Academic Officer (Provost/CAA) with the primary responsibility to lead and coordinate the strategic direction for student academic success efforts at the university. Working directly with deans, directors, and other campus administrators, this position will design and implement an aggressive university-wide strategy for the improvement of undergraduate student retention and degree completion rates. Reporting to the Vice Provost for Student Success is the Assistant Dean for Student Success who oversees the Center for Student Success. The Registrar, the Associate Director for Undergraduate Advising, and the Associate Director for Student Athlete Advising will also report to this position.

The Vice Provost for Student Success will unite and lead a team of professional staff and student employees in Academic and Athletic Advising, the Registrar’s Office, and all areas under the Centers for Student Success which include the Writing Center, the Office of Accessibility Services, and the Academic Center for Excellence (composed of Academic Skill Services, International and ELL Student Services, Tutoring Services, Transfer Student Services, and Athlete Student Services) The primary mission of the Vice Provost for Student Success is to directly and proactively promote and support students’ academic success by offering a wide range of services.

The position will serve as a liaison and resource to parents of university students. In conjunction with the Associate Provost, the Director of General Education, and the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE), the role will also serve as a resource to students and faculty in developing best practices in learning.

The position is responsible for developing and implementing strategic priorities for undergraduate advising and other student services, for coordinating design of curricular initiatives related to academic success, and for facilitating modification and adoption of relevant university policies and procedures. This position will work closely with Academic Affairs, Institutional Research, Enrollment Management, Student Life, and other campus bodies engaged in research and assessment of student drop-out patterns and intervention opportunities promoting graduation.

Responsible for providing campus-wide direction regarding student academic success strategies and tactics, and for implementing new programs and policies to achieve strategic goals.

Principal Accountabilities

1. Serve as the university’s chief retention officer and chair the Retention Committee.

2. Collaborate in campus-wide development, planning and execution of effective strategies to identify key performance indicators and strategic outcomes

3. Conduct and oversee institutional and departmental audits of student success patterns in order to identify opportunities for programmatic change.

4. In conjunction with the Director of General Education, monitor success of newly implemented General Education curriculum.

5. Develop resources and strategies for students across the university, which will include visionary initiatives that focus on the relationship between student success, persistence to graduation and Registrar and advising functions.

6. In coordination with campus stakeholders, develop a five-year Student Success Plan for the university, as well as an iterative process for initiating new strategies and tactics.

7. Oversee and assess institutional reform efforts directed towards improved student academic success.

8. Leverage performance indicator tools, analyze data and share results on a frequent and regular basis with administrators, faculty and staff for timely intervention.

9. Communicate with parents of Bryant students regarding resources, success strategies, academic policies and expectations, and student performance.

10. Develop and coordinate Pre-fall programs offered by Academic Divisions.

11. Further develop, refine, and expand academic success programming for at-risk students including first-generation and PELL students as well as those on probation.

12. Coordinate with Associate Provost and CTE to champion student-centered teaching and learning.

13. Coordinate placement of Work Study students within Academic Affairs.

14. Work with Enrollment Management for open houses/admitted student events.

15. Coordinate with and support Associate Provost and Associate VP of Student Affairs with participation of Academic Affairs in First-Year Orientation and the Multicultural and International Leadership Experience (4MILE).

16. Coordinate with Counseling Center on support for students with mental health, anxiety, and motivational issues.

17. Further develop, refine, and enhance services and support provided to transfer students.

18. Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

This position is best served by an individual with a master’s degree in higher education, education, social sciences, or policy analysis and a minimum of 6-8 years of progressive and demonstrated experience working in the areas of student success, retention, or relevant roles. within higher education with a record of success in delivering results; terminal degree is preferred. The candidate must have familiarity with academic preparation; academic engagement; social engagement; family dynamics; college financing; student health and wellness and other issues affecting academic outcomes and retention of students as well as proficiency in developing strategies for success. The incumbent must possess the ability to evaluate and assess policies and systems, facilitate change processes, and lead with integrity and inspire others. They will have a strong collaborative leadership style and a strategic and creative approach to issues with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships internally and externally. They must have the demonstrated ability to promote an inclusive environment that reflects the broad diversity and backgrounds of our students, faculty, and staff. The candidate must possess superior written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated analytical skills and the ability to concurrently manage multiple tasks with frequently shifting priorities.
