Job Description Summary
Reporting to the Vice Provost for Student Engagement, VPSE
Fellows are responsible for developing, articulating, and implementing best practices for strategic recruitment, enrollment, service
implementation, participant eligibility and service documentation, and student progression plans for all participants across 180 Penn
Pipeline programs with a special focus on leading the PennRSSA programming annually for up to 5,000 Philadelphia students and recent alumni
from ages 12 – 20 years of age in partnership with the Associate Deans, faculty, and graduate student assistants from all of Penn’s twelve
graduate and professional schools. VPSE Fellows are also expected to use in-person and digital, synchronous, and asynchronous, strategies to
drive program awareness, to build, and to sustain a world-class recruitment and service delivery for eligible participants.

Part of
the job is devoted to developing the VPSE’s ten home programs, which involve programming for high school, undergraduate, graduate, and
professional students. Each fellow will serve as graduate or postdoctoral coordinator for at least one undergraduate Ph.D. preparation
program. Teaching may be possible, given the fellows’ interests and the needs and availability of relevant departments.

The rest of
the fellowship is designed for the fellows to partner the VSPE’s engagement and access initiatives, including work with the University’s
Pipeline Council and Pipeline Program Directors Group. Fellows are also expected to continue their independent scholarly research and
participate in relevant academic conferences.

Fellows will also be expected to represent the Vice Provost for Student Engagement at
University, City, regional, and national events, and programs. As such, the fellows must be able to think innovatively about developing or
expanding programs designed specifically with the goal of student engagement, access, and pipeline support.

Job
Description

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage, develop, and implement programming to ensure the PennRSSA program
    contributes to the educational progress of up to 5000 program participants each summer in compliance with University and federal statutory
    and regulatory provisions.
  • Identify, maintain continuous contact with, and collaborate vigorously with SDP school
    administrators and faculty, participant-serving organizations including the Philadelphia Youth Network, Penn faculty and staff, community
    leaders, agencies, and administrators for the purpose of participant recruitment. Encourage enrollment into the program through
    non-traditional mechanisms including media, church, and other community presentations. Schedule and conduct recruitment presentations.
    Complete recruitment reports as required.
  • Hire, train, and effectively manage the performance 100 part-time graduate
    student staff during academic year and summer programming. Lead the recruitment, hiring, onboarding, training, supervision, and evaluation
    of part-time staff in the development and delivery of innovative, hybrid, academic and college preparatory curriculum to ensure the academic
    growth of participants including their transition into higher and post-baccalaureate education.
  • Partner the work of the
    VPSE with Penn Pipeline Programs across the University through the Penn Pipeline Directors Group and the Penn Pipeline Council. Establish
    and maintain systematic recordkeeping, and data collection procedures for documenting participant eligibility, service provision, and
    program evaluation, including maintaining and updating files, monitoring participants’ performance, program retention, program completion,
    post-secondary enrollment, and progress toward college graduation.
  • Responsible for creating enrollment, registration, and
    exit surveys for the program. Further responsibilities include creating databases of program applicant information, including demographic
    data and application status. Ensure the completion of electronic and paper data entry and filing; conduct routine audits and reconciliation
    of program data; create and prepare reports capturing program data; and conduct regular assessment of program objectives’ status.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualification Overview:

The Division of the Vice Provost for Student Engagement
(VPSE) at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for the position of pre-doctoral or postdoctoral “VPSE Fellow.” Applicant
disciplinary areas may include any fields or thematic disciplines. Also, applicants with first-generation and/or pipeline program experience
and related sectors of higher education advancement are especially invited to apply. Direct experience with college or graduate school
admissions, curriculum design, virtual programming, and asynchronous instruction is a plus.

VPSE seeks candidates interested in
encouraging a broad spectrum of under-represented community members to pursue baccalaureate study, graduate and professional degrees, and
post-doctoral careers in academic research. The fellowship seeks to attract promising candidates who are also dedicated to pipeline and
access/DEI programming, student development, and participant mentorship, and whose professional, life, and research experience will
contribute significantly to the University’s mission.

Specific Qualifications

  • Applicants must have completed an earned
    BA.Master’s or Ph.D. degree in any discipline at the time of application preferred.
  • Strong leadership, digital literacy,
    organization, interpersonal, communications, presentation, and information management skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving and
    preparing underserved, diverse participants for academic success and post-secondary enrollment
  • Experience with instructional design
    and virtual learning environment
  • Strong organizational, programming, motivational, and leadership skills
  • Strong
    interpersonal, written, presentation and technology skills
  • Applicants must be authorized to work legally in the United
    States.
  • Ability to travel locally and nationally (work on some nights and weekends will be required).

Mandated Skills

  • Proficient in MS Excel
  • Working knowledge of any data processing language (STATA, R, or Python)
  • Experience with
    data tracking and data visualization
  • Experience organizing, maintaining, and updating data from multiple sources into a single
    database
  • Strong communication skills
  • Experience developing surveys/forms (Qualtrics, Google Forms, or another
    platform)
