Job Summary:

The Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning (VPTL) seeks to hire an experienced higher education professional to play a lead role in shaping strategies for using data, technology, and assessment to advance student learning at UW-Madison. The successful candidate will join the leadership team of the Division for Teaching and Learning (DTL). The Assistant Vice Provost for Academic Outcomes and Assessment will set strategy for and supervise the work of DTL’s student learning assessment (SLA) team; help develop policies, strategies and programs for advancing data informed educational practices; and work with the VPTL to monitor and set strategy for the ecosystem of teaching and learning software and applications at UW-Madison.

The Division for Teaching and Learning works to support inclusive, impactful learning experiences for all UW-Madison students. The Division is led by the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning and is home to the Center for Teaching, Learning and Mentoring (CTLM), the Morgridge Center for Public Service, the Office of Undergraduate Advising (OUA), Student Learning Assessment (SLA). , and the Wisconsin Institute for Science Education and Community Engagement (WISCIENCE).

Plans and directs the administrative and operational activities of one or more recognized departments or divisions under the purview of the Office of the Provost, which may include curriculum development and approval, undergraduate and graduate program enhancement, academic policy creation and review, and compliance or accreditation. .

  • 10% Sets priorities that align with the strategic directives of the Office of the Provost; ensures units effectively carry out duties in a way that best supports the strategic direction of the university and the academic mission. Provides direct supervision of department/division leadership staff, and monitors compliance with laws/regulations, university policies and procedures, and relevant contractual obligations
  • 25% Advises and collaborates with the Provost, Vice Provost, and/or Associate Vice Provosts on critical issues, representing the functional area of ​​supervision at appropriate meetings and events as requested; and serves on and/or leads various programs and/or university committees as directed
  • 5% Monitors on-going assessment and continuous improvement of programs/services by guiding the establishment of annual goals, ensuring progress towards goals is met, articulating challenges, and reporting on annual outcomes and achievements for programs/services
  • 5% Supports special initiatives and/or grant-funded programs that require the Provost or Vice Provost’s attention with respect to program design, planning, coordination, and interaction with internal and external stakeholders
  • 15% Facilitates collegial, collaborative working relationships with a broad range of stakeholders, partners with administrative and academic departments to support initiatives, and gathers input from key stakeholders to support recommendations
  • 25% May exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees
  • 10% Serves on various university review committees, working with a wide range of constituencies including the Faculty Senate, Deans and Associate Deans, General Counsel, and University Leadership
  • 5% Other duties as assigned


  • 1. Serve as a senior adviser to the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning, helping shape goals and strategies for using data, technology, and assessment to advance student learning.
  • 2. Serve on the leadership team of the Division for Teaching and Learning, working to enhance conversation and collaboration related to data and technology across the division and its units.
  • 3. Supervise and set strategic direction for DTL’s Student Learning Assessment team.
  • 4. Evaluate and improve the academic assessment process, support institutional accreditation, support academic program and course assessment, and provide training support in partnership with campus colleagues, schools/colleges, and departments.
  • 5. Evaluate assessment software and facilitate the analysis of available assessment data within programs, schools/colleges, and the institution.
  • 6. Develop and implement institutional policy, strategy and programs to advance data informed educational practices. Support campus, school and college partners using data-driven insight for meaningful academic outcomes and student experiences.
  • 7. Working closely with the VPTL, monitor and set strategy for the ecosystem of teaching and learning technology at UW-Madison.
  • 8. Assess technology-related developments in higher education; partner with schools/colleges and the Division of Information Technology’s Academic Technology unit to assess and set strategic directions for teaching and learning software applications.
  • 9. Ensure responsible stewardship of DTL resources devoted to teaching and learning software and applications.
  • 10. Facilitate relationships with stakeholders, such as school/college leaders, Division of Information Technology, Graduate School, Division of Continuing Studies, Academic Planning and Institutional Research, and Division of Student Affairs.

General Expertise in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
7. Knowledge and experience of academic affairs and the evolving landscape of teaching and learning in a large public university.
8. Ability to develop, integrate and lead initiatives across the teaching and learning domains, with demonstrated success in working collaboratively with colleagues in central units as well as in schools and colleges.

Specific Expertise in Assessment, Technology, and Data Informed Educational Practice
9. Experience coordinating assessment efforts at the institutional, program and/or course levels.
10. Knowledge of formative and summative and direct and indirect assessment methods and practices.
11. Knowledge of teaching and learning technology and digitally-enhanced teaching resources.
12. Demonstrated experience with data-informed educational practices.
13. Exposure to learning analytics.
14. Advanced knowledge of higher education data management and reporting systems.
